Senator Sanders followed in the footsteps of the rest of the New England Delegation and leaned heavily on the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education accounts this appropriations season, submitting over 50 projects for earmark potential.  Those accounts were the most competitive due to House members’ inability to submit projects into this category.  Senator Sanders signaled a strong focus on academic improvements across the state, with requests for funding on behalf of afterschool programs, arts and sciences education, as well as health related training programs. Among those that garnered funding include the Community Health Centers of Burlington, Inc. for three million to renovate the community practice and for the integration of a neighboring dental practice.

The second highest pool of projects fell under Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, coming in at more than thirty million in requests for the Senator. Senator Sanders focused on projects that sought funding for affordable housing options across the state, with requests for the construction of an energy efficient 30-unit mixed income building, as well as renovation of a homeless veterans housing facility.

In his first appropriations cycle as a US Senator, Senator Welch kept his submissions focused.   It’s no surprise that Senator Welch, a new member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, put forwarded 46 project requests under the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development accounts.

Senator Welch only received earmarks for a little higher than half of the projects submitted this season, and the majority of those requests came in less than one million in price. Among the largest submittals put forward by the Senator include $5 million for the Bennington County Industrial Corporation to redevelop the Mount Anthony House into new apartments, office space, and retail facilities. Another notable success for Senator Welch was securing $5.8 million to expand Vermont State College System’s capacity to train dental therapists and hygienists. The project was awarded under the Labor HHS Health Resources and Services Administration account, making it a large victory in a highly competitive bill.

Congresswoman Balint

Total Requested: 15 projects – $12.06 million

Total Funded: 14 projects – $9.78 million

In her first term as Congresswoman for Vermont, Rep. Balint stretched her priorities across several different areas for her constituents. Six of the Congresswoman’s requests fell under THUD accounts for Economic Development and Improvement and Highway Infrastructure Programs.  The remaining requests went through the Agriculture and Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittees. Four of the Congresswoman’s largest projects submitted for funding captured $1 million, including for a new clinic at Grace Cottage Family Health and Hospital Primary Care Medical Office Building that will aim to serve residents across 25 towns in Vermont. Rep. Balint was also able to secure $1 million in funds for a new Family Wellness and Economic Empowerment Campus site to better serve the community.
